Many international students work on campus to earn money. On-campus employment is a very standard part of the university experience for Americans, too. International students in F-1 status are allowed by immigration regulations to work up to 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters and an unlimited number of hours during summer and winter vacations.
F-1 students are not allowed to work off campus without prior authorization. In addition, off-campus work authorization cannot be approved until after the student has completed one full academic year (two full-time semesters). Never work off campus before first speaking with an International Student Advisor.
